A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
