Lifetime of Income Insufficient for UK Employees to Become Part of Richest 10%, Report Finds

Per recent study, the typical worker in the UK would have to work half a century of earnings to reach the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Expanding Economic Disparity Across Decades

This research analyzed financial assets statistics from the Covid pandemic period and determined that back in the mid-2000s, it would have taken 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to join the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the report observed: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings across their entire working life would remain unable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The analysis found that the disparity between the net worth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was £1m in 2006-08, but had increased to £1.3 million in inflation-adjusted terms by the pandemic years.

The analyst further stated: "These disparities are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the wealth gap growing in absolute terms, the share of complete net worth in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," per the study.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK surged from thrice the yearly economic output, to nearly seven and a half times.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

So-called "passive" increases, through growing real estate costs and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the primary factors of the widening wealth gap since 2010, as stated in the study.

These increases generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the intergenerational wealth divide.

Age-Based Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 grew by more than 100% in actual value, from £135,000 in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Regional Disparities

There were also stark regional variations, with the typical amount of wealth in the pandemic period reaching 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where property prices have typically increased quickly, versus £110,000 in the NE of England.

COVID Era Effects

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate countless homes were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 during the COVID years (across the pandemic timeframe), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the report finds.
